A Chinese Wedding Dutch Style

I photograph a lot of destination weddings and this was a wedding that I really looked forward to.  Vernon and Kit Ling are an incredibly nice couple living in Rotterdam with their young son William.

As usual, I started at the bridal preparations in Kit Ling's parents apartment in the suburbs of Rotterdam.  Also capturing the day on video were my good Dutch friends Yael and Hugo from The Dreamers.  The bridal preparations were good humoured and really relaxed so had a great atmosphere although with a tiny bit of pre-wedding nerves thrown in - which is only natural…!!

After that it was onto the great hall in the Stadhuis van Rotterdam.  This is a beautiful historic building and a fantastic venue to get married in.  I've worked there several times now.  The ceremony was preformed by a really good friend of Vernon and Kit Ling which added an extra intimacy to the proceedings.

Weather forecast for the day was typical Irish - not great, but we did manage to get some brief photographs of the happy couple and a butterfly (!) in the garden after the civil ceremony before we had to make our way to the magnificent Laurenskerk for the religious ceremony.   Now fully restored after extensive damage in WWII, the church stands proud in the centre of Rotterdam with towering pillars and incredible organ above the entrance.

Afterwards, as time was very tight we had planned a brief photoshoot in a park beside the Wereldmuseum on the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas.  Unfortunately it was raining by now but we still managed to get some super quick shots under the cover of trees.  Then it was across the road to the Wereldmuseum for the reception and party and of course the traditional Chinese tea ceremony.  A great day made even better by a wonderful happy couple.
