Breathtaking Engagement Shoots at the Cliffs of Moher

Coming to vacation in Ireland and thinking of engagement shoots at the Cliffs of Moher? Or possibly popping the question and having a secret proposal shoot at the Cliffs of Moher..? Or possibly a vow renewal. Either way, read on…

Breathtaking Engagement Shoots at the Cliffs of Moher

Well as a wedding, elopement and engagement photographer, I do this all the time. Not just at the Cliffs of Moher but all over Ireland. In fact my most popular location amongst visitors to these shores is on the other side of the country just outside Dublin. Beautiful County Wicklow. But more about that Irish engagement photo location later.

Engagement Shoots at The Cliffs of Moher

Firstly let’s talk about the cliffs. It is true that the Cliffs of Moher are symbolic of Ireland and rightly so. Standing over 200 meters (700 feet) tall at their highest point they are a magnificent sight. You stand there feeling so small, insignificant and humble as you take it all in. The sound of the waves crashing far below your feet and the sea birds calling as they ride the air currents. They are breathtaking and the experience is one you will not forget. Tourists are drawn the cliffs and as a result I work here often with engaged couples from around the world. I know the area, I know the climate. I know the pathways. Where it is safe and where it is not. I know where to go for the best photos according to the time of day and where potentially the best light will be. I also know how long it takes to get from point A to point B. All the things that you need to know to get the most from engagement shoots at the Cliffs of Moher.

I can offer engagement shoots at the Cliffs of Moher anytime of the year.

However during the summer months of June to August, it is only possible to shoot there at certain times of the day as otherwise it is just too crowded with tourists. You and I will not achieve the photos that we want. That is something that we can work around though if your schedule allows for some flexibility.

For Engagement Shoots at the Cliffs of Moher I will have a FaceTime or Skype call with you beforehand where we will discuss the plan. Particularly so if you are planning on a secret proposal shoot at the Cliffs of Moher. This for obvious reasons does need to be planned in detail. However, it’s a lot easier than you may think because as luck would have it, the set-up at the Cliffs facilitates this.

I typically spend a couple of hours hiking along the cliff path with my couples. Not for the faint-hearted or physically unfit though. There are easier routes to take but even still, a certain degree of fitness is required. Proper footwear required too..!!

I will always advise my clients to try and schedule the photoshoot to end around the time of sunset. This way, if it’s not cloudy we can incorporate the setting sun into your photographs. This is golden hour when the light is at its best for photography.

The low setting sun light bounces off the cliffs and is viewable at certain points along the cliff path.

Doolin is also an option for engagement shoots at the Cliffs of Moher

There is also nearby Doolin which is a great location for photos. As an optional extra, we can extend the session and spend some time here or at Corcomroe Abbey or both..! It’s up to you..! Corcomroe Abbey is also a great location for a secret proposal if weather may be an issue as it offers a bit more protection than the cliffs. More about that below…

Engagements shoot at the Cliffs of Moher and Corcomroe Abbey

Corcomroe Abbey is another relatively close by location perfect for engagement photos, a secret proposal or even an elopement. It is an old ruined abbey around 700 years old. It has no roof but it interior offers some shelter from the elements for a photo session if the weather is a bit rough. It is situated in the Burren and slightly off the beaten track so never really become very busy with other tourists. This makes it ideal for a quiet photo session or elopement ceremony. Also great for renewing of vows. I can include this in for engagement shoots at the Cliffs of Moher photo sessions if desired.

People do ask about the weather at the Cliffs of Moher and if they don’t, I will bring it up anyway. It can be an issue as on the Cliffs, you are totally exposed. There is no hiding or sheltering options. Firstly regardless of the weather at the Cliffs of Moher, it is stunning. It doesn’t matter if it is blue skies and zero wind or heavily overcast and windy. It will be breathtaking. You do however need to be prepared for 4 seasons in one day here.

Therefore be prepared to get wet regardless of the time of year. On a positive note, if it is wet, it generally doesn’t stay wet for long. Rain comes and goes very quickly here. It rains for 20 minutes and then the sun comes out. This is typical Irish weather. Whilst I have worked in all types of weather at the cliffs, I have never had to cancel a session there due to the weather. It has always worked out. There will be days in the future where it won’t though due to a passing storm and so the occasional cancellation will be inevitable. In these circumstances and if rescheduling is not possible, any monies paid will be refunded.

But what about other locations? Well there are absolutely loads. I do however have an absolute favourite but that’s in another blog. Click on the link below to head on over to check out my favourite location in Ireland for elopements, proposals and engagement shoots.
